This is probably the question we get asked most often at Rose Vi Nails — and for good reason. Acrylic and gel nails look similar from the outside, but they’re completely different in how they’re applied, how they wear, and what kind of maintenance they need.
After doing thousands of sets of both over the past five years, here’s what we actually tell clients when they sit down in our chair and ask “which should I get?”
What’s the Actual Difference?
Both acrylic and gel nails are nail enhancements — they add length, strength, or both to your natural nails. But the chemistry and application process are completely different.
Acrylic nails are created by mixing a liquid monomer and a powder polymer that form a hard, durable coating when exposed to air. They’re shaped while wet and harden quickly. Acrylics have been around for decades and are known for being extremely durable and easy to sculpt into any shape or length.
Gel nails use a gel formula that’s cured under a UV or LED lamp. They’re softer and more flexible than acrylics, which means they feel more natural but can be slightly less resistant to extreme wear and tear. They also tend to have a glossier finish straight from the cure.
Durability & Longevity: Which Actually Lasts Longer?
Straight answer: acrylics last longer between appointments. Most clients get 3–4 weeks out of an acrylic set before needing a fill. Gel nails typically need attention every 2–3 weeks because the gel can lift at the edges more quickly, especially on clients who work with their hands a lot.
However, there’s a nuance here that most people miss: gel nails are actually less prone to cracking than acrylics. Because gel is more flexible, it bends slightly under pressure instead of snapping. If you break a nail, an acrylic break tends to be more dramatic (sharp edges, more likely to take part of your natural nail with it).
